- Have a dental checkup before departure
- Have necessary vaccines early
- Take out travel insurance-including Medical evacuation
- Carry an appropriate Travelers medical kit
- Start Malaria Pills early to check for side effects
- Take Malaria Pills regularly as prescribed
- Avoid Mosquitoes and other biting insects
- Regularly apply repellant's containing DEET
- Sleep under treated bed-net or behind screens
- Respect local customs and laws
- Apply sunscreen regularly
- Safe eating means-Boil it, Cook it, Peel it or forget it
- Avoid Ice cubes and used bottled water or Soft drinks
- Resist Ice Crams ( especially from street vendors)
- Don't brush your teeth in tap water
- Take Anti-Diarrhea medication from ITVC (Lomotil, Fasign, Stemetil, Noroxin, Gastrolyte Senakot) in your travel kit
- Wash hands before eating and after using bathroom
- Practice safe sex. Always use a condom. HIV is still a major risk
- Accidents kill more travelers than infectious diseases. So
- Observe speed limits
- Wear seat belts/ helmets
- Avoid night driving
- Do not go near or touch animals. Seek rabies vaccine Immediately if bitten, scratched or licked on an open wound
- Keep your shoes on when outside
- Seek medical advice immediately if you develop a fever
- Emergency Malaria treatment may be needed if medical advice is not available. Take with you if not taking Prophylaxis.
